In class we discussed the ideas of master and little narratives and how they were portrayed in our list of popular culture. My writing group chose to look at The Breakfast Club to dissect to see the different types of narratives that were portrayed throughout the film. Even though the movie was primarily filmed in a high school library, there was a lot going on in the film.
My group thought that the master narrative in the film was the students in the school on Saturday and how they have come together because they all hated each other in the beginning. The little narrative was that each character had their own story, a story about why they are who they are. Some examples were that the bully's dad beats him at home, and then they wrote a letter to Mr. Vernon saying "What we found out is that each one of us is a brain...and an athlete...and a basket case...and a princess...and a criminal..." This shows that they are all individuals and have come together in detention. There are also other narratives such as a rebel narrative because they are clearly rebels if they are in detention in that first place.
I really enjoyed this assignment and how we got to connect a well-known movie to literacy.
ReplyDeleteIt's always fun to find links between movies and literature. I enjoyed this post, good job!
ReplyDeleteI thought this was a cool example of master and little narratives. It is interesting how each little narrative can come together to create a very meaningful master narrative.
