Heros

"A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself."-Joseph Campbell

In class on Wednesday we got into our writing groups and did Hero Narrative Group Work and we were asked to select ten movies or TV shows from the class list and to discuss the heroes in them.  On my group came up with our list but The Blind Side stood out to me in particular.  The Tuohy family took in an under privileged high school student named Michael Oher and gave him a home to stay in and a bed that he never had.  The Tuohy's had everything they needed and selflessly took in another child.  Like the quote says, a hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.  The Tuohy family didnt' have to take in Michael but they did anyway, to help him.  They weren't flying through cities saving people from burning buildings or bank robbers.  But they gave Michael Oher a chance to succeed because he couldn't have had the opportunities to do so before.  Everybody has different views of a hero and that is actually pretty interesting to me.

  1. Interesting post Tanner. Someone's definition of a hero may vary from another's, but I liked your example from The Blind Side. Little kids think of Superman or Batman as heroes, but I think it's important that kids realize every-day, regular people can be heroes as well.

  2. I like how your view of heroism is not like the average super hero there are everyday heroes who don't risk their lives everyday.

  3. This is interesting. I think the hero master narrative is definitely appropriate, eventhough it is not your typical super-hero scenario. I could also see a victim narrative being present in Oher's life before the Tuohy family brought him in.

  4. Good post! It's good that we cleared up what a hero is. It doesn't have to be a superhero or someone risking their lives, but it can be an average person doing a good deed.

  5. I wrote my blog on heroes this week too! I think that family did an amazing thing, and they are most definitely heroes. A hero doesn't need to have super powers, and kill villains. They just need to be selfless, a role model, and help others because they want to. This is a perfect example of that!

  6. I agree that everyone has their own views on who a hero is and in my opinion the Tuohy's were the hero in this movie because they had everything and opened their home to a stranger who had nothing. The wolrd needs more families that are willing to do this, but today's culture tells us it's unsafe and that nothing good will come out of it. I think that ever since this movie came out more families were willing to take the chance because of how well it worked out for the Tuohy's

  7. I absolutely love this movie. My writing group also choose this movie. We said that the mother was viewed as the Hero because she showed much courage taking in Big Mike and giving him a home and good family.

  8. Heroes are more than we can ever realize sometimes. It's so sharpening to see someone make a difference in someone's else life. A hero in my opinion is a difference maker in someone's else life. Everyone has their own perception of hero, and it's good that you classified that out. Ohh yea, this was a good discussion on class also. Good job!
